Cybersecurity tools developed by the department

In cooperation with the University of Szeged, Balasys IT Ltd. is developing network security solutions combining state-of-the-art technologies optimized for cybersecurity tasks in industrial environments.

The consortium completed its project "CyGWICS - Development of a network gateway tool for cyber security tasks optimized for industrial environments" on the 31st of December 2022.

Maintaining the security of industrial automation and process control systems (ICS/SCADA) is one of the biggest challenges of our time since a successful attack on such a system could not only cause material damage but could also result in serious losses in terms of the environment or even human lives.

In this project, a tool was developed that can monitor industrial network traffic in real-time, identify potential attacks, and filter them out. The tool’s classic firewall is complemented by machine learning-based solutions that can be used to detect unknown attacks by identifying the unusual nature of network traffic.

The Department of Software Engineering at SZTE was responsible for the development of the network intrusion detector. The knowledge gained from this research, the models, and the data transformation procedures developed provide a solid basis for the development of further similar security software systems, or for any development task where the identification of patterns other than the usual behavior is required.

The project was awarded a grant of HUF 765 164 369 from the NRDIH Fund under the contract 2020-1.1.2-PIACI-KFI 2020-1.1.2-PIACI-KFI-2020-00114.
